Lovely example of this early cob recovered from the Sao Jose Shipwreck. The Sao Jose was a Portuguese slave ship which sank in 1794 near the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa after hitting a rock. The ship was on its way to Brazil with over 400 slaves from Mozambique. Fantastic example of this early cob with superior obverse detail and a neat “P” reversed error on the assayers mark which is clearly visible.
