1622-30 8 Reales Cob Spain NGC *Spice Islands Shipwreck*

$495.00

Neat sea salvaged 8 reales cob recovered from the Spice Islands shipwreck of 1630. Strong details remain on the front shield. Interestingly, this example is from Spain which is seldom seen compared to Bolivia and Mexico cobs from this wreck. The Spice Islands Shipwreck was possibly a Spanish plate ship or merchant vessel that sank circa 1630 near the Spice Islands (the Moluccas) in Southeast Asia. The crew intentionally scuttled and burned the ship to prevent capture or to signal for rescue. Coins of this type circulated in the American colonies. This coin would have been U.S. legal tender until 1857.
