Solid example of this early cob from Spanish colonial Mexico recovered from the Joanna shipwreck. The Joanna was a ship from the British East Indiaman fleet which wrecked off a reef at the southern most tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas in 1682. The ship was en route to Surat and 24 lives were lost with remaining crew able to swim to shore. The wreck was discovered and salvaged in 1982. Solid details remain, especially on the reverse cross. Coins of this type circulated in the American colonies. This coin would have been U.S. legal tender until 1857. The pictured COA is included with this coin.
