Isaac I Komnenos (reigned 1057–1059) is represented on this exceptionally struck gold Histamenon Nomisma that reflects the waning grandeur of mid-11th century Byzantium. Isaac I was the son of general Manuel Komnenos, orphaned at an early age and raised by Emperor Basil II. Isaac became a successful military commander and was chief of the eastern armies from 1042-1054. In 1057, he lead a coup against the newly crowned Michael VI Bringas and was successful in overthrowing and capturing the throne. He rewarded his loyalists well but raised taxes significantly and confiscated church properties resulting in opposition. In 1059 Isaac fell ill and retired the throne to Constantine X.

The obverse features a depiction of Christ seated on a backless throne wearing nimbus cruciger, raising right hand in benediction and holding gospels in left arm. The reverse shows Isaac I wearing a crown and military cloak, holding a sword in right had and sheath in left. Gorgeous example with strong eye appeal and an exceptional strike.
