Lovely Justin II Solidus in uncirculated condition by NGC with a 5/5 strike. Justin II was the nephew of Justinian I and was granted the throne by Justinian on his deathbed. Justin II’s rule was marked by stark economic changes compared to his uncle’s rule, including halting payments to Avars breaking a long standing truce. This led to an invasion and the loss of the greater part of Italy under his rule. Justin II eventually fell into insanity after additional war with the Persians. Upon his death in 578, the thrown was succeeded by Tiberius as Tiberius II Constantine.
Struck in high karat gold, the obverse depicts a bust of Justin II wearing an ornate helmet and holding Victory atop a globe and a shield with horseman motif. The reverse features Constantinopolis seated holding a scepter and a cross topped globus. The mintmark CONOB can be seen at the bottom. Lovely mint state example with nice centering and a fantastic strike with flashy lustrous fields.
