The Maurice Tiberius AV Solidus (582–602 AD) graded AU by NGC is a notable example of late 6th-century Byzantine gold coinage issued during the reign of Emperor Maurice Tiberius, reflecting both the artistic conventions and the political realities of a turbulent period in the Byzantine Empire. Maurice Tiberius was a prominent general and fought successfully against the Sassanid Persians during his youth and brought a victorious end to the wars as emperor. Struck in high karat gold, the obverse depicts a frontal bust of Maurice wearing an ornate helmet and holding a cross topped globus. The reverse features an early rendition of an angel, Victoria, the goddess of victory. She is the Roman/Byzantine version of the Greek Nike frequently seen on early Greek coinage. Victory is seen holding a long jeweled cross and a cross topped globus. Lovely near mint state example with nice centering and a fantastic strike.
