Interesting late issue Connecticut colonial script. The Hartford & New Haven Turnpike was authorized in 1798 and opened in 1799. These script notes were used as a passage ticket and were engraved by Amos Doolittle of New Haven on thick paper from Hudson and Goodwin company. Signed by H. Baldwin, president of the turnpike. The use of mills as a denomination was an early decimal system adopted by the United States and used conversion tables based off U.S. coinage starting in 1793. The use of mills was later abandoned after a sufficient amount of half cents were in circulation. This shows the unique relationship between the early paper money and coinage of our nation.
