The February 17, 1776 Continental issue was unique in that is included 4 fractional denominations. This $1 note features an emblem of a weighted bowl on an acanthus plant. This emblem is encircled by the latin motto “DEPRESSA RESURGIT” (Though crushed it recovers). An interesting motto and very fitting for the times. The reverse features nature print of ragweed and 2 willow leaves. Additionally, this note was signed by John Williams. Williams was an American Founding Father, member of the Continental Congress, and signer of the Articles of Confederation. Williams also served as a colonel in the North Carolina militia and was a founder of the University of North Carolina.
