The May 9, 1776 Continental issue shared the same style as November 29, 1775 and was printed just months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Printed by Hall and Sellers on course paper containing mica flake and blue threads. This $5 bill features an emblem of a hand that is gathering food and bleeding due to thorn pricks. The latin motto “SUSTINE VEL ABSINE” (Either survive or give up) encircles the emblem. The reverse features bold nature print and the Hall and Sellers hallmark. This note is a blue counterfeit detector which were used by merchants to compare suspected counterfeits that they encounter. Incredibly interesting piece of history and very rare with only 2 examples in the PMG pop report. Exceptional quality with clean paper and bold ink well deserving of the PPQ designation from PCGS.
