The September 26, 1778 issue featured new $50 and $60 denominations. It also marks high inflation in colonial times due to $75,000,000 in bills authorized and the release of these higher denominations. This $5 note features an emblem of a hand gathering food and bleeding due to thorn pricks. This emblem is encircled by the Latin motto “SUSTINE VEL ABSTINE” (Either survive or give up). The reverse features nature print of willow leaves. Lovely comment free VF example.
