Sold Out

The September 26, 1778 issue featured new $50 and $60 denominations. It also marks high inflation in colonial times due to $75,000,000 in bills authorized and the release of these higher denominations. This $40 note features an emblem of an all-seeing Eye of Providence shining on 13 stars representing the colonies. This emblem is encircled by the motto “CONFEDERATION”. This emblem was designed by Francis Hopkinson, an American founding father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The reverse features nature print of carrot leaves. Extremely scarce contemporary counterfeit with only 10 graded by PMG. Additionally, this was a very well done example, likely produced by the British with the mission of sinking the American economy. A historically significant note for any Continental collection. Previously a part of the extensive Dr. O’Shaughnessy Continental Collection.

Signers: Samuel Lyon, Robert A. Roberts
