Continental Currency Fr#CC-84CT September 26, 1778 $40 PMG AU-53 EPQ GCC Green *Contemporary Counterfeit*

$965.00

The September 26, 1778 issue featured new $50 and $60 denominations. It also marks high inflation in colonial times due to $75,000,000 in bills authorized and the release of these higher denominations. This $40 note features an emblem of an all-seeing Eye of Providence shining on 13 stars representing the colonies. This emblem is encircled by the motto “CONFEDERATION”. This emblem was designed by Francis Hopkinson, an American founding father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The reverse features nature print of carrot leaves. Extremely scarce contemporary counterfeit with only 18 graded by PMG. This was a very well done example, likely produced by the British with the mission of sinking the American economy. Lovely example with original paper and bright foraged signatures, well deserving of the EPQ designation from PMG and evergreen sticker from GCC. Tough to find counterfeits of this quality. A historically significant note for any Continental collection.
