Sold Out

The January 14, 1779 issue was passed to act as a redemption for notes of the May 20, 1777 and April 11, 1778 issues due to extensive British counterfeiting. This note is water marked “UNITED STATES” in 2 lines and new boarder cuts for this issue say “UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA”. This $1 note features an emblem of a weighted bowl on an acanthus plant, encircled by the latin motto “DEPRSSA RESURGIT” (Though crushed it recovers). Interestingly, this example has a jumbo margin at the bottom and right side, suggesting that this note was never trimmed to size.
