Date: January 14, 1779
Denomination: $4
Friedberg #: CC-90
State: Continental
Certification: PMG & GCC
Grade: Choice Uncirculated 63, GCC Gold
Comments: None
The January 14, 1779 issue was passed to act as a redemption for notes of the May 20, 1777 and April 11, 1778 issues due to extensive British counterfeiting. This note is water marked “UNITED STATES” in 2 lines and new border cuts for this issue say “UNITED STATES OF NORTH AMERICA”. This is the only Continental issue to implement water marking likely to thwart the rising threat of British counterfeiting. This $4 note features an emblem of a boar charging a spear. This emblem is encircled by the latin motto “AUT MORS AUT VITA DECORA” (Either death or an honorable life). The reverse features rich nature print of rose leaf. Absolutely stunning example with exceptionally bold ink throughout that pops against the attractive paper color. Large top and right margins make this note feel like an under grade. The quality of this example for the grade is fortified by the elusive gold sticker from GCC. Fantastic addition for any collection.
