La Louisiane was originally claimed by the French and refers to the area covering the Mississippi River Valley. Much of this area was ceded to England in 1763 and the remainder was sold to the United States in 1803 (Louisiana Purchase). This very early 1720 bill was issued by the Royal Bank and backed by the French King. These notes were intended to be spent on development of French-American colonies and were printed on paper watermarked “Billet de Banque” and embossed with the bank’s seal. Attractive note and much scarcer than the 10 Livres variety with a total of 14 graded by PMG. A key addition for a collector seeking to build a 14 or 15 colony set that does not come up often.
