Maryland Colonial Note Fr#MD-106 June 8, 1780 $1/2 PCGS 25 *4 Known*

$1,650.00

This incredible scarce 1780 Maryland issue was known as “Black Money” due to the bold black borders with the denomination embedded within. The rarity of this note is deceiving as its borders look very similar to the common 1775 and 1776 issues but their position is shifted on this 1780 issue. The state arms can be seen at the center of the reverse, differing from the previous two issues. Printed by Frederick Green and was issued by the Treasurer of the Western Shore. Interestingly, this issue was funded/backed by existing deposits in England, Bank of England stock, and by confiscated Tory property. Incredibly interesting note with a rich history and extreme rarity with only 4 known to exist today.

Signers: Frederick Green, Thomas Johnson Jr.
