The January 1, 1767 Maryland issue was the earliest governmental use of the term “dollar” as an official monetary unit not only in the United States, but the entire world. Stock of the Bank of England was used to back and secure the value of this Maryland issue. The intricate borders of this note were engraved by Thomas Sparrow and printed by Jonas Green on thin weak paper. There were deliberate errors and secret marks present in this issue to deter counterfeiting. Superior example of this early bill with a rich historical significance.
