This note from the October 18, 1776 Massachusetts issue is commonly referred to as a “Codfish” note, due to the codfish on the upper boarder of the front. The backs of these bills, featuring a pine tree were printed by John Gill, and the more ornate front was engraved by Paul Revere. Interestingly, the top edge and part of the codfish of another note can be seen on the bottom of the front of this note. Of the 5,143 bills originally printed, only 10 are known to survive today.
