Massachusetts Colonial Note Fr#MA-209CT June 18, 1776 24s PMG 63 EPQ *British Counterfeit*
This very interesting bill from the June 18, 1776 Massachusetts issue would have been printed by Benjamin Edes. This example is a British counterfeit and particularly well done compared to most. The front features elaborate borders and a vignette of a minute man holding a sword and a copy of the Magna Carta. The British produced these forgeries as the Revolution boiled, with the goal of sinking the up and coming economy of the United States of America. The pen cancel marks and prestine condition indicate that the colonists were fortunately able to identify this counterfeit prior to it facing much circulation. Gorgeous note despite being a forgery with a rich history, perhaps more interesting than an original example. Tough to find this nice and well deserving of the EPQ designation from PMG.
