Comments: “Exceptional Paper Quality”
This interesting bill from the June 18, 1776 Massachusetts issue would have been printed by Benjamin Edes. This example is a British counterfeit and is particularly well copied compared to most. The front features elaborately engraved borders and a vignette of a minute man holding a sword and a copy of the Magna Carta. The British produced these forgeries as the Revolution boiled, with the goal of sinking the up and coming economy of the United States of America. The pen cancel marks and pristine condition indicate that the colonists were fortunately able to identify this counterfeit prior to it passing many hands. Absolutely gorgeous note with a rich history, perhaps more interesting than an original example. Tough to find this nice and well deserving of the EPQ designation from PMG as well as the evergreen sticker from GCC affirming the quality of this example.
