Massachusetts Colonial Note Fr#MA-285CT May 5, 1780 $20 PMG 35 *Contemporary Counterfeit*
This later issue Massachusetts note was redeemable in Spanish milled dollars by December 31, 1786 with 5% interest. The exchange rate for these bills was $40 in older Continental Currency for every $1. Printed on red and black paper by Hall and Sellers with a similar style to Continental Currency, especially the emblems on the reverse. The paper is watermarked “UNITED STATES”. Incredible un-cancelled example, significantly harder to find than its hole cancelled counterpart with high eye appeal. Additionally, this example is a contemporary counterfeit. Incredibly scarce compared to authentic examples with only 13 in the PMG population report. High quality counterfeit that likely fooled many in its day.
Signers: Samuel Henshaw, Richard Cranch, Peter Boyer (Guaranty) (All Forgeries)
