Comments: “Pieces Missing”
This incredibly scarce “Penny” from the 1737 Massachusetts issue was printed by John Draper with border cuts by John Bushnell. The front features a typeset design with an elaborate circular border and a winged angel at the bottom. There were 30,000 of these 1 Pence bills originally printed and there is only 1 known authentic example. This note is a very interesting contemporary counterfeit and the only one known to exist, unique 1/1. This is the earliest note that I have handled. This note was likely discovered by the early Massachusetts-Bay colonists after significant circulation and eventually pen cancelled “Counterfeit” on the reverse. Nearly impossible to find colonial currency prior to the 1750s. Unique opportunity to own this one of a kind, mysterious, and intriguing note.
