The notes of the January 15, 1741/42 issue are referred to as the second new tenor bills. During this time Massachusetts was undergoing severe inflation so this new issue featured smaller denominations and backing by silver or gold coins. This 2 Shilling bill is one of the 6 smallest denominations and was engraved under the “third plate” where higher denominations were printed with the first and second plates. The backs of the six lowest denominations, including this note reused the wood engraved faces from the 1737 small change issue. The reverse of this 2 Shilling bill is absolutely gorgeous featuring a pine tree and Native American. The front is also very elaborate with rich text and detailed emblems and pillars. Printed by Kneeland and Green, this is a museum quality piece and a highlight for any collection. This is the only 2 Shilling note from this series known to survive today. Previously a part of the revered Ford-Boyd Collection.
