This New Hampshire note was printed by Daniel Fowle in 1775. His nephew, Robert Louist Fowle assisted in the printing operation but their partnership was severed due to a difference in political opinion. Robert Louist Fowle was a Tory and was arrested on April 15, 1777 on charges of producing counterfeits of this New Hampshire issue, such as this note. The House of Representatives ordered that all notes from this issue be redeemed. Robert Fowle escaped from prison in August 1777 and fled. It is likely that this note was one of Robert Louist Fowle’s counterfeits, adding an interesting background story to the note.
