New York Colonial Note Fr#NY-166 February 16, 1771 5 Pounds *Possible Counterfeit*
The February 16, 1771 New York Issue features an ornate top boarder and the arms of New York City, designed by Elisha Gallaudet. This issue fell victim to extensive counterfeiting despite the motto “Tis Death to Counterfeit” below the New York City Arms. Printed by Hugh Gaine on thin paper. Interesting example that is punch and pen cancelled, possibly contemporary counterfeit. Tape repairs and design redrawn but nice appearance.
Signers: Walter Franklin, A. Lott
