The August 25, 1774 New York City issue was the first paper money issued by an American city. The 4 Shilling notes were printed and issued, but by error they were not authorized. The reverse of this note features a steam operated water pump by Christopher Colles. Hugh Gaine printed 4000 of these 4 Shilling notes in red and black ink. Attractive problem free note.
