These bills are considered promissory notes of the City of New York and were the first paper money issued by an American city. The front features borders engraved by Elisha Gallaudet and printed in orange ink with a typeset design. The reverse features an illustration of Christopher Colles proposed design of a steam operated water pump. Printed by Hugh Gaine in red and black ink. Interesting first issue water works note.
