This 1776 bill is a promissory note of the City of New York also known as the “Water Works Issue”. There is a small 3 above the first T indicating that this is the third water works issue. The front features a type set design with red and black ink. The reverse is printed on separate course paper and shows the proposed idea of a steam operated water pump by Christopher Colles. Border cuts were engraved by Elisha Gallaudet and printing was done by Hugh Gaine. Only 2,500 of these 4 Shilling notes were originally printed. Gorgeous high grade circulated example with light paper and strong ink. Well deserving of the evergreen sticker from GCC affirming the quality of this example.
