New York Colonial Note Fr#NY-184 January 6, 1776 8s PMG 63 EPQ *Exceptional*
This bill is a promissory note of the City of New York also known as the “Water Works Issue”. There is a small 3 above the first T indicating that this is the third water works issue. The front features a type set design with red and black ink. The reverse is printed on separate course paper and shows the proposed idea of a steam operated water pump by Christopher Colles. Boarder cuts were engraved by Elisha Gallaudet and printing was done by Hugh Gaine. Only 5,000 of these 8 Shilling notes were originally printed. Stunning choice uncirculated example with appealing clean and crisp paper and bold ink throughout. Well deserving of the elusive EPQ designation from PMG.
Signers: J. Watts Jr., George Brewerton
