New York Colonial Note Fr#NY-238 February 20, 1790 1 Penny PMG XF-40 GCC Green *14 Known*

$495.00

The Common Council of the Corporation of the City of New York issued these small denomination notes to satisfy the need for “small change” in the city. After numerous quantities of London counterfeits emerged, a call for redemption of these notes occurred by June 1, 1799, redeemed notes were burned. The mass redemption and destruction of these small change notes make survivors exceedingly rare today. Superior example of this note usually seen in low grades. With strong paper and bold ink, this note is well deserving of the Evergreen sticker from GCC. Scarce bill with only 14 known to exist and this example is near the top of the population report.
