The bills from the August 8, 1778 North Carolina issue were payable in Spanish milled dollars and printed by James Davis on dark course paper. This $10 note bears the motto “Union of Hearts The Strength of Interests”. There was a shortage of these notes due to a smallpox epidemic at the time. Of the 16,666 originally printed, only 9 of these notes are known to exist today.
