The notes of the August 21, 1775 Hillsborough North Carolina issue were printed with engraved copper plates with ornamental boarders and unusual vignettes. The vignette of this $4 note has masonic emblems encircled by the motto “AERA OF MASONRY 1775”. Of the only 4,000 of these notes originally printed, only 5 are known to survive today.
