The April 2, 1776 North Carolina issue is unique in the fact that this issue contains 56 different varieties, the highest number of varieties of and American paper money issue. This $1/2 note features an interesting vignette of an elaborately engraved sailing ship. The vignettes of this issue were engraved in copper plates by Gabriel Lewyn, a goldsmith from Baltimore. Scarce and sought after 1776 note with a neat contemporary sewing repair which shows the length colonists went to keep these notes in circulation. Of 12,500 $1/2 bills originally printed, only 11 are known to exist today.
