This $1/2 note features an interesting vignette of an elaborately engraved sailing ship. The vignettes of this issue were engraved in copper plates by Gabriel Lewyn, a goldsmith from Baltimore. Scarce and sought after 1776 note with a neat contemporary sewing repair which shows the length colonists went to keep these notes in circulation. Of 12,500 $1/2 bills originally printed, only 11 are known to exist today.
