The April 2, 1776 North Carolina issue is unique in the fact that this issue contains 56 different varieties, the highest number of varieties of any American paper money issue. This $8 note features an interesting vignette of an elaborately engraved spotted leopard. The vignettes of this issue were engraved in copper plates by Gabriel Lewyn, a goldsmith from Baltimore. Incredibly scarce, of the 10,000 leopard notes originally printed only 11 are known to survive today. Fantastic details remain with light paper and bold printing on this popular 1776 note.
