The bills from the August 8, 1778 North Carolina issue were payable in Spanish milled dollars and printed by James Davis on dark course paper. This $1/4 note bears the motto “Independence”. There was a shortage of these bills due to a smallpox epidemic at the time. Of the 100,000 $1/4 bills originally printed, only 22 are known to exist today.
