The bills from the August 8, 1778 North Carolina issue were payable in Spanish milled dollars and printed by James Davis on dark course paper. This $1/4 note bears the motto “Independence”. There was a shortage of these notes due to a smallpox epidemic at the time. Incredibly low survivability, of the whopping 100,000 $1/4 bills originally printed, only 26 are known to exist today. Appealing XF example with bold ink.
