The bills from the August 8, 1778 North Carolina issue were payable in Spanish milled dollars and printed by James Davis on dark course paper. This $1 note bears the motto “Liberty and Peace, the reward of virtuous Resistance”. There was a shortage of these notes due to a smallpox epidemic at the time. Incredibly low survivability, of the 31,250 $1 bills originally printed, only 23 are known to exist today. Nice VF+ example for the price point with strong ink.
