The bills from the August 8, 1778 North Carolina issue were payable in Spanish milled dollars and printed by James Davis on dark course paper. This $50 note bears the motto “The Rising States”. There was a shortage of these notes due to a smallpox epidemic at the time. Only 5,000 of these $50 notes were originally printed, and only 13 are known to exist today.
