The bills from the August 8, 1778 North Carolina issue were payable in Spanish milled dollars and printed by James Davis on dark course paper. This $5 note bears the motto “The Rising STATES”. Elaborate borders on the front and back. Death to counterfeit can be seen on the front top boarder. There was a shortage of these notes due to a smallpox epidemic at the time. Beautiful AU example with strong paper and bold ink, especially on the reverse.
