The bills of the March 20, 1771 Pennsylvania issue were initially passed for the purpose of defending Philadelphia, but were used to fund street paving. The Penn Arms can be seen on the front with pillared borders. Nature print and “To Counterfeit is DEATH” can be seen on the reverse. Notes of this issue were printed in red and black ink. This 5 Shilling note has 1 red crowns to the left of the Penn Arms, representing 5 Shillings of value. Printed by David Hall and William Sellers on mica flake paper. Additionally, this note bears the signature of Thomas Mifflin. Mifflin was an American Founding Father and signer of the United States Constitution.
