The bills of the March 20, 1771 Pennsylvania issue were initially passed for the purpose of defending Philadelphia, but were used to fund street paving. The Penn Arms are on the front with nature prints on the reverse. Additionally, “To Counterfeit is DEATH” can be seen on the reverse. Notes of this issue were printed in red and black ink. This 15 Shilling note has 3 red crowns beneath the Penn Arms, with each crown representing 5 Shillings of value. Printed by David Hall and William Sellers on mica flake paper. This absolutely gorgeous example is well deserving of PMG’s EPQ designation Highest graded example, TOP POP. This note also bears the signature of Francis Hopkinson. Hopkinson was an American Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He is also credited with designing early versions of the American Flag. Truly one of a kind treasure.
