The bills of the March 20, 1771 Pennsylvania issue were initially passed for the purpose of defending Philadelphia, but ended up being used to fund street paving. The Penn Arms are on the front with nature prints on the reverse. Additionally, “To Counterfeit is DEATH” can be seen on the reverse. Notes of this issue were printed in red and black ink.
