Rhode Island Colonial Note Fr#RI-177 May 3, 1775 1s PMG VF-20 *Finest Known*

$695.00

The May 3, 1775 Rhode Island issue was printed on thin paper by John Carter. This note has a minimalistic typeset design with an emblem of an anchor encircled by the Latin motto “IN TE DOMINE SPERAMUS” (In you, Lord, we trust). There is also a fish on the top border. This issue is incredibly scarce in every denomination. Lower denominations, such as this were printed with a blank back. This 1 Shilling note was the third lowest denomination. Very scarce with low survivability, of the 10,000 originally printed only 9 are known to exist today. Newman lists this note for $2250 in VF. Lovely example with high eye appeal, usually seen in tattered condition. This VF20 example sits at the top of the population report, finest known. Strong addition to any colonial collection.
