Date: November 6, 1775
Denomination: 9 Pence
Friedberg #: RI-209
State: Rhode Island
Certification: PMG
Grade: Very Fine 25
Comments: “Repaired”
The November 6, 1775 Rhode Island issue was printed on thin paper by John Carter. This note has a minimalistic typeset design with an emblem of an anchor encircled by the latin motto “IN TE DOMINE SPERAMUS” (In you, Lord, we trust). This issue is generally scarce in every denomination. Lower denominations, such as this note, were printed with a blank back. Only 12 examples of this 9 Pence note are known to exist today, likely due to heavy circulation being a low denomination and thin fragile paper resulting in low survivability. Newman lists this note for $2250 in VF. Absolutely gorgeous example with light paper, strong ink, and red ink signatures that pop. Incredibly tough to find this nice, usually seen tattered. This PMG 25 ties the top spot in the PMG population report with superior eye appeal for the grade, finest known.
