Date: November 6, 1775
Denomination: 9 Pence
Friedberg #: RI-209
State: Rhode Island
Certification: PMG
Grade: Very Good 8
Comments: “Contemporaneously Sewn at Center”
The November 6, 1775 Rhode Island issue was printed on thin paper by John Carter. This note has a minimalistic typeset design with an emblem of an anchor encircled by the latin motto “IN TE DOMINE SPERAMUS” (In you, Lord, we trust). This issue is generally scarce in every denomination. Lower denominations, such as this note were printed with a blank back. Only 11 examples of this 9 Pence note are known to exist today, likely due to heavy circulation being a low denomination. Interestingly, this piece is contemporaneously sewn at the center which shows the great lengths the colonists went to keep these notes in circulation. Newman lists this note for $1500 in Fine.
Signers: John Cole, John G Wanton
