Date: January 15, 1776
Denomination: 6 Pence
Friedberg #: RI-218
State: Rhode Island
Certification: PMG
Grade: Very Good 10
Comments: “Backed”
The January 15, 1776 Rhode Island issue was printed on thin paper by John Carter. This note has a minimalistic typeset design with an emblem of an anchor encircled by the Latin motto “IN TE DOMINE SPERAMUS” (In you, Lord, we trust). There is also a fish on the border above the serial number. This issue is generally very scarce in every denomination. Lower denominations such as this 6 Pence bill had a blank back. This was the lowest denomination of the issue. Very desirable and tough to find Rhode Island note from 1776, key to completing a set. Incredibly rare low denomination, of 6,000 originally printed, only 3 examples are known to survive today with this PMG VG-10 being the finest known, TOP POP. Despite being low grade, nice details remain and free of stains. Backed by a contemporary news paper showing the extent colonists went to keep these bills in circulation.
