Rhode Island Colonial Note Fr#RI-226 January 15, 1776 20s PCGS 20 *8 Known*
The January 15, 1776 Rhode Island issue was printed on thin paper by John Carter. This note has a minimalistic typeset design with an emblem of an anchor encircled by the latin motto “IN TE DOMINE SPERAMUS” (In you, Lord, we trust). There is also a fish on the border above the serial number. This issue is generally very scarce in every denomination. Higher denominations such as this 20 Shilling bill had a printed back. This was the fourth highest denomination of the series. Very desirable and tough to find Rhode Island note from 1776. Out of 6,000 originally printed, only 8 examples are known to survive today. Affordable example in lovely condition besides the ink stain. Newman lists this note for $2250 in VF.
