Rhode Island Colonial Note Fr#RI-235 March 18, 1776 5s PCGS AG-3 *4 Known*

$395.00

The March 18, 1776 Rhode Island issue was printed on thin paper by John Carter. Issued at East Greenwich. This note has a minimalistic typeset design with an emblem of an anchor encircled by the Latin motto “IN TE DOMINE SPERAMUS” (In you, Lord, we trust). This issue is very scarce in every denomination, and this is the first Rhode Island bill from March 18, 1776 that I have handled. Higher denominations such as this 5 Shillings bill had a printed reverse with ornamental borders. Very desirable and tough to find Rhode Island note from 1776, key to completing a set. Incredibly scarce, of 3,000 originally printed, only 4 examples are known to survive today. This low grade note is a survivor, contemporaneously sewn showing the lengths colonists went to keep these notes in circulation.
