This incredible unicorn of a note was printed in 1737 by William Claggett in Newport. This bill was re-dated to 1738, as can be seen above Committee at the bottom right. The primary purpose of this issue was to support a loan on 20 year delayed amortization mortgages that were interest bearing at 5%. There is interesting language on this early note such as “Due from the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England”. This 3 Pound note boasts elaborate side boarders with the State Seal at the bottom left plus baby angels and flowery patterns along the edges. PCGS notes this example as a contemporary counterfeit although I am unaware of the counterfeit giveaways. Incredibly unique note with no other 3 Pound examples known to exist. A center piece for any high caliber collection.
